Aquatic Therapy

imageMany physical therapy patients who cannot tolerate land-based exercises may benefit from water exercise. Aquatic therapy utilizes the properties of water to expand the possibilities for patients who may have weight bearing or mobility restrictions. The buoyancy, support and accommodating resistance of water enhances exercise and creates a safe environment for progressive rehabilitation.

Patients with the following conditions may benefit from aquatic therapy:

  • Lumbar disc disease
  • Chronic pain
  • Osteoarthritis of the ankles, knees, hips, shoulders or back
  • Decrease of strength and range of motion due to disease
  • Stroke recovery
  • Prenatal and postnatal low-back pain, pelvic pain and swelling
  • Post-operative recovery from spine surgery or joint replacement
  • Gait training
  • Cardiovascular disease and surgery
  • Cardiac conditioning

Aquatic therapy programs are offered individually or in a group setting.

Knowing how to swim is not necessary, and a physical therapist, physical therapy assistant and or a physical therapy technician are in the water with patients at all times.
